Dr. Lou, D.O.G. : GI Stasis in Rabbits and Guinea Pigs

Hey guys! It’s Dr. Lou here.

I’d like to talk about some of our smaller friends today: Rabbits and Guinea Pigs. These little ones are some of our more sensitive creatures seen at Thomas Animal Clinic. When one of these pets begin showing signs of illness, it’s super important to get them in to see us as soon as possible. One especially common reason that they should come and see us, is something called GI stasis. This is when the gut’s motility freezes up, and everything stops moving along in the body. Crazy, huh? This can be a very dangerous, life-threatening situation for our little furry friends to be in. If it has been over 12 hours since your rabbit or guinea pig has eaten, or if you notice a drastic decrease in stool production, be sure to call us immediately and make an appointment for Dr. Thomas to help figure out what’s going on.
